The Queensland Government introduced a levy on waste going to landfill from 1 July 2019.

Queensland sends 55% of its waste to landfill, and until 1 July 2019, was the only mainland state without a waste levy. The levy was introduced to reduce waste disposal, increase recycling and support industry development in resource recovery.

Businesses are encouraged to look at how they can reduce waste, separate waste streams and recycle more, to help reduce the costs of sending waste to landfill.

It is smart business to realise the economic opportunities in reducing waste and looking for alternative ways to manage the waste your business produces.

Your waste has value and, with a levy applied on all waste going to landfill, it makes commercial sense to look for ways to minimise your waste and capitalise on the resources you may otherwise throw away.

The waste levy applies to waste disposed to landfill. The landfill operator may pass this levy on to customers, normally through adjustment of gate fees. The levy is intended to make landfill a less attractive option compared to more productive and job-creating uses for these resources.
